What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact exercise system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, originally designed as a form of rehabilitation and physical conditioning. It focuses on strengthening the core—often referred to as the “powerhouse”—which encompasses the muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and glutes. Rather than building bulky muscle, Pilates emphasizes precise, controlled movements paired with deliberate breath control. This approach improves posture, restores natural spinal alignment, and enhances overall flexibility while keeping joint impact to a minimum.

The discipline is practiced either on a mat or using specialized apparatus, such as the Reformer, Cadillac, and Wunda Chair, which utilize springs and pulleys to provide variable resistance. Suitable for all fitness levels—from injury recovery to athletic conditioning—Pilates builds functional strength that translates directly into everyday movement. By training the mind to maintain precise control over the body, it helps prevent injury, relieves chronic muscular tension, and fosters long-term physical durability.
